Bark & Bud

A study in Bio-Regional Herbalism

A series of workshops that focus on the nuanced healing properties of our local wild plants and trees, examining their various medicinal parts at seasonally appropriate times.  Specific themes of different body/mind systems and specific herbal approaches to health will be emphasized at each workshop, in line with the plant medicines that are covered.

Participants are welcome to sign up for just one workshop, or for the entire series.

These workshops are appropriate for people who have completed the Experiential Herbalism series and wish to continue their herbal studies.  Those who have some prior knowledge of herbalism are also welcome to apply.  Space is limited to keep learning groups small and focused.

The Workshops

Note that the first two workshops have shorter hourse and are held at different locations from the latter three.

#1 Bark & Bud    Medicines of Circulation

Sunday April 12 2026  10 am -3 pm, Picton ON (specific location TBD)   $85

Early spring is an ideal season for harvesting bark medicine, and it is the time when the tree buds begin to slowly awaken.  Bark is the delivery system of the tree’s nutrients, bringing life to a new season of growth.  Like the flow of blood through our bodies, sap runs throughout the tree, helping to flush in nourishment and flush out wastes.  We’ll begin our day with a tree identification walk.  We’ll learn ID tips for trees in their dormant state, and talk about the specific medicines of a few of our local trees.  After a break for lunch, we’ll make a medicine together, working with fresh tree bark.  Everyone will take some of this medicine home with them at the end of the day.

#2 Clean Leafy Greens  Gentle Nourishment & Detox

Sunday May 3 2026   10 am – 3 pm  Picton ON (specific location TBD)    $85

Many of the leaves that emerge on cold-hardy, young spring plants are rich sources of minerals, vitamins and other nutrients.  Chlorophyll helps to gently cleanse the liver.  The enzymes in these fresh young leaves help to bring oxygen to the body’s tissues, stimulating healthy growth and restoration, and often helping to reduce inflammation.   Incorporating these greens in your spring diet is a great way to benefit from their nutritional and cleansing properties.  We’ll examine a number of wild edible and medicinal plants bearing rich, nutritious greens.  We’ll also work with fresh greens in a simple extraction process that I will share, and you’ll take home some of the medicine we make.

#3  The Medicine of Flowers  Nervous System Support & Much More

July 4 & 5  2026   10 am – 5 pm   two days; lunch included   New Moon Farm, PEC ON   $360

Flowers often represent the peak of a plant’s maturity before it begins to produce seeds for the next generation of growth.  I like to think of a flower as a symbol of the plant’s “crown chakra”.  The highest vibrational expression of the plant is seen and felt at this stage.  Working on both physical and energetic layers, the medicine of flowers often has a lot of influence on the body’s nervous system—the part of us that processes inputs of all types from our surroundings.  Flower medicine can help to shift patterns of thought and behaviour that do not serve us when taken in the form of a flower essence.  Flower medicine can also be taken to address physical health issues, shifting the body’s terrain into a state of microbial balance and reduced inflammation.  In early summer, there are many flowers to explore, and medicines to make!  That is why this workshop runs for two full days!  To elevate the experience even further, flower-infused lunches will be served each day by our very own Chef Chris Byrne.

#4 Seed & Scent   Neuro-Endocrine Medicine

August 8 2026  10 am – 5 pm  lunch included  New Moon Farm, PEC ON   $180

In late summer, we begin to see the early stages of seed and fruit formation.  These developing seeds carry the blueprint of the next generation.   This includes any information necessary for the future plants’ adaptive capacity—for example, a plant that endured a drought may attempt to equip its seeds with strengthened water-retentive abilities to better handle that type of challenge in the future.   Green seeds, or immature seeds carry nourishment for sensitive systems, vulnerable to changes in their environments.  They tend to be particularly supportive in the endocrine and nervous systems, where calibration is continually occurring.   The hot days of late summer also tend to bring out the most potent aspects of our aromatic herbs.  The sun and heat draw their essential oils to their surfaces, where they are more detectable and more accessible.  Many aromatic herbs are key medicines, whose volatile oils help to instigate needed changes in the body.  In this class, we’ll study a number of aromatic plants at their peak, and look at ways to extract their medicine.  We’ll also explore the developing seeds that are prominent at this time.

# 5  Root Medicine   Deep Fortification

October 3 2026      10 am – 5 pm  lunch included   $180

The fall is the season when everything gathers and descends into the ground—from the fallen leaves and seeds to the internal nutrients and healing components of the plants and trees, which collect in the roots for the winter.  Root harvests of perennial plants or trees will tend to be richest in the fall for this reason.  Root medicine tends to reach deeper physical layers of the body, often influencing internal organs such as the liver, kidneys and intestines.  Minerals collect in the roots at this time of year, and become accessible via root medicine.   Supportive functions related to immunity often comes from root medicine, largely via cleansing and fortifying the body’s terrain to give it more resilience in the colder months. Because roots are denser and tougher than the more ephemeral leaves and flowers, their medicine must be extracted through slow cooking or slow maceration processes.  In this workshop, we’ll explore a number of root medicines, and go through the process of harvesting and processing roots for medicine making.
